Mission of the Month

Matthew 25:37-40 [NIV] (37)“Then these righteous ones will reply, ‘Lord, when did we ever see you hungry and feed you? Or thirsty and give you something to drink? (38)Or a stranger and show you hospitality? Or naked and give you clothing? (39)When did we ever see you sick or in prison and visit you?’ (40)“And the King will say, ‘I tell you the truth, when you did it to one of the least of these my brothers and sisters you were doing it to me!’

The Mission of the Month (MOTM) is a program to emphasize the need for giving, above and beyond, what is given to the Church. By serving others, we serve Christ and fulfill the mission that he left us.

Thornwell Home for Children

Luke 18:16 - But Jesus called the children to him and said, "Let the little children come to me, and do not hinder them, for the kingdom of God belongs to such as these."

Thornwell Home for Children began as a dream in the heart of a young Presbyterian minister in Clinton, SC. Following the devastation of the Civil War, William Plumer Jacobs, of First Presbyterian Church in Clinton, wanted to build an orphanage. His dream was energized when 10-year-old Willie Anderson of a nearby community gave Reverend Jacobs fifty cents and said, “This is to help build your orphanage.”

Named for Dr. James Henley Thornwell, theologian, Thornwell opened its doors on October 1, 1875, to 10 orphaned children. Dr. Jacobs’ belief “that God so willed and would, therefore, support the endeavor,” carried him and his beloved orphanage through the post-war years up until his death in 1917. Now each year on October 1, the Thornwell Home honors Dr. Jacobs and his dream; and gives thanks to God not only for the children and their community, but also for the willingness of God’s people to support this ministry for children in need.

For more than 130 years, Thornwell has been children’s extended family, providing guidance and nurturing as each child matures. The Thornwell Children and Family Ministries’ staff works to strengthen the ties between Thornwell children and their biological families, and their residential program strives to create a homelike, cottage-based environment for children ages 2 to 18.

Geneva Presbyterian Church will donate $100, along with any designated giving by the Congregation. If you wish to donate to this charity, please write “MOTM” on the memo field of your check and drop it in the offering plate.
